Recently, the city of Chennai was severely affected by cyclone Michaung, which devastated the historic city. In this context, a video that apparently shows a flooded supermarket in Chennai has gone viral on social media. This video shows a few fish flopping around on the supermarket floor. Let’s fact-check this claim through this article.

Claim: These visuals show a Supermarket in Chennai filled with flood waters.

Fact: This is an old video from an incident that occurred in Georgia in the year 2018 where a fish tank reportedly broke in a grocery store in Tbilisi, the capital city of Georgia. Hence, the claim made in the viral post is False.

Upon observing that a user on one of the viral posts containing this video mentioned that this video was actually from Georgia, we searched the internet with relevant keywords, looking for the context behind the viral video. This search led us to news reports and social media video posts from 2018 on the viral video.

According to the Mirror.co.uk, this incident happened in Tbilisi, the capital city of Georgia. Reportedly, an aquarium in a grocery store broke, which resulted in fish flopping around on the store’s floor in shallow waters. Contrary to the viral claim, this video shows an incident that happened in 2018 and does not show a flooded supermarket in Chennai. 

To sum up, an old and unrelated video is falsely shared as the plight of a flooded supermarket in Chennai.
