A post accompanying a few pictures of a large white building is being widely circulated across social media platforms with the claim that the USA has opened the world’s largest library in the name of Dr B.R. Ambedkar. Through this article let’s fact-check the claim made in the post.
Claim: The USA opened the world’s largest library in the name of Dr B.R. Ambedkar.
Fact: The Viral images show China’s Tianjin Binhai library. It is in no way connected to Dr B.R. Ambedkar. Further, no reports were found regarding any library in the USA that was named after Dr B.R. Ambedkar. However, recently on 14 October 2023, the tallest statue of Dr B.R. Ambedkar outside India was unveiled in USA. Hence, the claim made in the post is FALSE.
On reverse image search of the viral photos, we found an article from CNN which stated that these images are from the Binhai Library located in Tianjin city of China.
Following this, through keyword searches, we discovered news articles about this library (here, here). According to these reports, the library was commissioned by Tianjin Binhai Municipality and is located in the cultural centre of Binhai district in Tianjin, a coastal metropolis outside Beijing, China. Tianjin Binhai Library was designed and built in a record-breaking time of only three years due to a tight schedule imposed by the local municipality.
This Library is in no way connected to Dr B.R. Ambedkar. Further, we searched to see if any libraries in the USA are named after Dr B.R. Ambedkar. No reports were found regarding any library in the USA that was named after Dr B.R. Ambedkar. However, we found that recently on 14 October 2023, the tallest statue of Dr B.R. Ambedkar outside India was unveiled in the USA.
To sum it up, the USA didn’t open any library in the name of Dr B.R. Ambedkar. The viral pictures show a library in China.
