Amidst heavy rains and floods in Gujarat (here and here), a video showing people assisting victims trapped in a flood is being circulated on social media (here, here, and here), with claims that it depicts Muslim men helping people in recent floods in Gujarat. Let’s verify the claim made in the post.
Claim: The video shows a group of Muslim men in Gujarat helping the people trapped in the flood.
Fact: This video is not from Gujarat but from Bangladesh. This is the video of students from Darul Uloom Madrasa in Munsirhat delivering food and water to people’s doorsteps by swimming. Hence, the claim made in the post is FALSE.
A reverse image search on keyframes from the viral video led to multiple media reports covering the viral video. We found that a Bangladeshi media channel named BanglaVision NEWS had uploaded a longer version of the video on its YouTube channel. The caption states that the individuals seen in the water are madrasa students aiding those trapped in the flood. We also discovered the viral video on the official YouTube channel of the Ahle Hadith Movement, a Bangladeshi Islamic organization. The description indicated that the footage was recorded in Feni, a city in Bangladesh.
In the video published by BanglaVision, we noticed a watermark reading ‘Video: Imran Husain.’ We confirmed that this video was posted by Imran Husain on his Facebook page, along with a link to the news channel. In one of his comments, he noted that students from Darul Uloom Madrasa in Munsirhat were delivering food and water to people’s doorsteps by swimming along Darbarpur Road, Munsirhat, Fulgazi Feni. We also contacted Imran Husain for further clarification and awaiting his response.
Additionally, we noticed a sign in the viral video with the words ‘Buro Bangladesh’ written in Bangla. Upon researching this, we discovered that Buro Bangladesh is a Bangladesh-based NGO founded in 1990, dedicated to the development of underprivileged communities. We verified this name board by comparing it with a name board published by a media report, finding it similar. Below is a comparison of both.
To sum up, a video showing people assisting flood victims in Bangladesh is being shared as it took place in Gujarat.
