A video (here, here and here) circulating on social media shows police chasing, forcibly capturing, and beating a man before putting him into a police vehicle. It is claimed that he was caught pelting stones at a train heading to the Kumbh Mela. Let’s verify the truth behind this claim.

Claim: The viral video shows police arresting individuals who pelted stones at a train heading to the Kumbh Mela.
Fact: The video actually captures a clash in Suri, Birbhum district, West Bengal, on 28 January 2025. During the incident, a Trinamool Congress worker grabbed a police officer’s collar while officers intervened in a dispute between two TMC factions over government land. The police arrested 20 people and seized firearms. This video has nothing to do with any stone-pelting incident at the Kumbh Mela. Hence, the claim is FALSE.
To verify the claim, we performed a reverse image search on Google, which led us to multiple versions of the same video (here and here). In the extended footage, police can be seen beating people gathered at the scene after taking the man into custody. The video’s caption, written in Bengali, states: “The Bengal police are in a similar situation. The Trinamool sand mafia pulled the collar of the police station’s IC’s uniform. The incident took place in the Ministil area of Mallikpur, Siuri, Birbhum.”

Further research led us to several YouTube news reports (here, here and here) featuring the viral video. According to these reports, the incident took place on 28 January 2025, in the Ministil area of Suri, Birbhum district, West Bengal. The police had intervened to control a clash between two factions of the Trinamool Congress over a land dispute.
Further research about this issue revealed multiple news reports (here, here, here and here) confirming that a clash between two Trinamool Congress factions over government land in Suri, Birbhum, resulted in the arrest of 20 people on 28 January 2025, including local TMC youth leaders. During the incident, TMC worker Amir Ansari grabbed the collar of the inspector-in-charge, as seen in the viral video, prompting police retaliation. Authorities seized three firearms and ammunition, while opposition parties criticised the Mamata Banerjee government. TMC leaders maintained that the police would handle the matter.

While there have been incidents (here and here) of stone-pelting on trains heading to the 2025 Prayagraj Kumbh Mela, there are no reports of police apprehending such people. Further, this particular viral video has nothing to do with such incidents.
To sum up, the video of police intervention in a TMC clash in Suri, Birbhum, is falsely linked to the Kumbh Mela stone-pelting incident.
