A video of a man pinning down another person while a few others try to stop him is being shared on social media with a claim that it shows the President of Maldives, Mohamed Muizzu, getting beaten in parliament. Let’s verify this claim through this article.

Claim: The viral video shows Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu getting beaten inside the Maldivian parliament.

Fact: The video shows a fight that broke out between two Maldivian MPs inside the Maldivian parliament on 28 January 2024. Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) MP Isa and ruling party Peoples’ National Congress (PNC) MP Abdullah Shaheem Abdul Hakeem reportedly engaged in a fight during a crucial vote. Hence, the claim made in the post is False.

To check the veracity of the viral claim, we performed a keyword search on the internet, leading us to multiple news reports (here, here, and here) about the viral video.

Reportedly, this incident took place in the Parliament of Maldives on 28 January 2024, when the leaders of the ruling coalition, the Progressive Party of Maldives and People’s National Congress(PNC), tried to disrupt the parliamentary proceedings as the opposition, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and The Democrats, disapproved of a proposal made by the ruling cabinet.

This resulted in a fight breaking out between the two groups. The viral video shows a fight between the MDP MP Isa and PNC MP Abdullah Shaheem Abdul Hakeem.

To sum up, the video does not depict Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu getting beaten inside the Maldivian parliament.
