A video (here, here, and here) that allegedly shows a student being beaten by a teacher in a Madrasa in India is doing its rounds on social media. Posts sharing this video claim that the student seen hanging upside down in the video is a girl. We fact-check this claim through this article.

Claim: Visuals of a little girl getting brutally punished in a Madrasa in India.

Fact: The video shows an incident that took place in Pakistan in 2018, in which a Madrasa teacher named Noor Muhammad beat a student hanging him upside down. The Incident reportedly happened in 2018, and the student is not a girl but a boy named Abu Bakr. The incident has nothing to do with India. Hence, the claim made in the post is False

To check the veracity of the viral claim, we ran a reverse image search on a few of the viral video’s keyframes. This search led us to news reports (here and here) on this incident in Pakistan.

Reportedly, this incident happened in a Madrasa in Rawalpindi during the winter of 2018 but came to light as a video went viral in June 2019.

As per the reports, the person hitting the student in the video is a Madrasa teacher named Noor Muhammad. He was arrested for beating the boy seen in the video; the young boy’s name is Abu Bakr

According to The Express Tribune, “Initial investigation suggested the incident occurred in winter last year(2018), after which a settlement was reached between the seminary management and the aggrieved party.” This evidence contradicts the viral claim that the video is from India.

To sum up, a video of a Madrasa teacher punishing a student in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, is falsely attributed to India.
