The video urges viewers to vote against the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and calls for legal action by CM Mamata Banerjee and Kolkata Police. Claim:  A Muslim youth stabbed a Hindu girl in broad daylight in West Bengal. 

Fact: The incident took place on 04 September 2024 in Belgharia, West Bengal, where a youth attacked a minor girl with a knife after she rejected his love proposal. Reports confirm that the accused is Aviijit Dutta. According to the Belgharia Police, there is no religious angle to the case, as both the accused and the victim are Hindus. Therefore, the claim made in the post is FALSE.

A reverse image search of keyframes from the viral video led us to a news article from The Times of India, published on 05 September 2024, which features the same viral video. According to reports, the incident took place on 04 September 2024 in Prafullanagar, Belgharia, West Bengal. A young man named Avijit Datta attacked a minor girl with a sharp weapon after she rejected his love proposal. The girl was seriously injured and was quickly taken to a nearby private hospital by locals. The accused also got hurt during the attack by the locals. The Belgharia police arrested Avijit Datta and took him to the hospital.

Reports on the same incident can be found (here, here, and here). They identify the accused as Avijit Datta, but the victim’s name is not disclosed as she is a minor.

For further information, we contacted the Belgharia Police, who clarified that the incident had no religious angle and that both the accused and the victim were Hindus. The police also confirmed that the accused’s name is Avijit Datta, as stated in the FIR
