A video going viral on social media (here, here, and here) claims to show an incident in Pakistan where a maulvi in a panchayat issued a fatwa instructing a woman to undergo Nikah Halala with her son after her husband gave her triple talaq. The video further claims that the woman, upon hearing this, bravely confronted the maulvi and beat him with slippers. Let’s verify the claim made in the post through this article.
Claim: The video shows a Maulana being beaten in Pakistan for issuing a fatwa instructing a woman to marry her son.
Fact: The viral video is from Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, India, not Pakistan. It shows a woman attacking a Maulana during a panchayat after he was accused of molesting her daughter under the pretext of performing an exorcism in 2024. The Maulana, identified as Maulana Furqan, was allegedly regarded as a healer by locals. Hence, the claim made in the post is FALSE.
A reverse image search of keyframes from the viral video led us to an X post by News 24, dated 30 September 2024 featuring the same video. The post stated that a woman beat a Maulvi with slippers during a panchayat in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh after he allegedly molested her daughter under the pretext of performing an exorcism.
Building on the details from the X post, we used relevant keywords to search further and found multiple media reports (here, here, and here) covering the incident. According to these reports, a mother confronted and attacked a Maulana after he was accused of molesting her daughter. The woman had initially sought his help for her daughter’s illness, but when the girl remained in his room for an unusually long time, the mother entered and allegedly found her in a dishevelled state. A Panchayat was later convened, where the mother publicly confronted and beat the Maulana. The reports identify him as Maulana Furqan, who was accused of molesting the girl under the pretence of performing an exorcism. Residents reportedly regarded him as a healer.
To sum up, a 2024 video of a woman from U.P. attacking a Maulana for molesting her daughter is falsely claimed to be from Pakistan over Nikah Halala.
