A video is being shared on social media claiming that the Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has come out in support of farmers protesting against the new farm bills. In the video, Rajnath Singh can be seen expressing his complete support to the farmers who participated in a dharna. Amid the ongoing farmers protest against the new agriculture laws passed by the Government of India, this post is going viral on social media. Let’s verify the claim made in the post.

The archived version of the post can be seen here.

Claim: Rajnath Singh has come out in support of the farmers who are protesting opposing the new farm bills.

Fact:  Video shared in the post is an old one. This video shows Rajnath Singh addressing a Kisan dharna at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi in the year 2013. This video has nothing to do with the ongoing farmers protest over the new farm bills. Hence, the claim made in the post is FALSE.

On searching for this video using relevant keywords, we found the extended version of the video published on the official YouTube channel of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on ‘20 March 2013’. This video was uploaded with the title ‘Shri Rajnath Singh addressing farmers staging dharna at Jantar Mantar, NewDelhi: 20.03.2013’. The same video was also uploaded in the official website of Rajnath Singh.

According to the article published by ‘The Hindu’, thousands of farmers gathered in New Delhi during March 2013, to start a ‘Mahapanchayat’ demanding farmers’ income commission to guarantee a minimum income to the farmers. From all these pieces of evidence, it can be concluded that the video shared in the post is an old one and has nothing to do with the ongoing farmers protest over the new farm bills.

To sum it up, a 2013 video of Rajnath Singh’s speech at a Kisan dharna is being shared now as proof of his support to the farmers protesting against the new farm bills.
