2017 video falsely shared as Police beating a man during vehicle checking

A disturbing video of a man being dragged by Policemen & beaten ruthlessly is being shared widely across social media. The claim is that Police in Basti district have thrashed the man during their vehicle checking on September 14, 2019. Let’s try to analyze the claim made in the post.

Claim: Video of Basti Police beating a man during their vehicle checking on September 14, 2019.

Fact: Video shows Basti Police beating a man for disturbing peace in the locality in an inebriated state. This incident took place in November-2017. Hence, the claim is FALSE

When searched on Google with keywords ‘Basti police beat a man’, many search results were obtained. A search result of ‘Samachar Plus’ had a news video relating to the video in the social media post. From the news video, it was found that the incident took place in November-2017 in which the Basti Police have beaten that man for disturbing peace in the locality in an inebriated state. When looked for other media reports on the incident, an article of ‘Patrika’ that was published on November 14, 2017, has also been found which corroborated this version that the man was beaten by the Police for disturbing peace in the locality.

Also, in response to a tweet by a user regarding the video, Basti Police have clarified that the incident has taken place in 2017 and it has nothing to do with vehicle checking.

To conclude, a 2017 video is being shared with a false narrative of Police beating a man during a vehicle checking.
