Visuals of a protest in UP’s Chandauli are being falsely shared as from violence-hit Manipur

A video of a naked transperson chasing down police personnel is being shared with a claim that the visuals show the current situation in Manipur. Through this article let’s fact-check the claim made in the post.

Claim: Visuals of a transperson chasing down police personnel in Manipur.

Fact: These visuals are from Uttar Pradesh’s Chandauli district, wherein supporters of a contestant in the municipal elections held in May 2023, staged a protest demanding a vote recount. During this protest, one transwoman chased down the police while being naked. The visuals have nothing to do with the currently violence hit Manipur. Hence, the claim made in the post is FALSE.

While it is true that the viral visuals show a transperson chasing police personnel, the visuals are, however, not from violence in Manipur, but from Uttar Pradesh.

Google search with relevant keywords yielded news reports that reported the same visuals. As per these reports, the visuals are from Uttar Pradesh’s Chandauli district and the incident took place during the municipal elections held in May 2023.

On 13 May 2023, during the vote count for the UP civic elections, a clash occurred between the supporters of a candidate named Sonu Kinnar and workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Subsequently, members of the transgender community who supported Sonu Kinnar demanded a vote recount and staged a protest while naked. During this scuffle, one transwoman chased police personnel with a stick, and visuals shared through the viral post are related to this clash.

Eventually, Sonu Kinnar was declared the winner after the recount of votes. Several news agencies have reported about the clash which can be viewed here, here, and here. Thus, it is evident that the viral visuals have nothing to do with Manipur.
