A video (here, here, here, & here) showing a man standing on a wooden bench being shot several times by a gunman at close range is being widely shared across social media platforms. It is claimed that the video depicts a man being shot dead in the Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh. The same video is being shared linking it to Jordan (here). In this article, let’s fact-check the claim made in the post.
Claim: Video of a man being shot by a gunman in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh.
Fact: The viral video shows a man being shot dead in Brazil. According to reports, this incident took place on 28 June 2024, and the victim is identified as Lucas Pereira, also known as Olhao. He was murdered by unknown PCC gunmen while working at a commercial location on Penetraçao 2 street, Novo Aleixo neighborhood, Manaus, Brazil. The Muzaffarnagar police have also confirmed that the video is not from Muzaffarnagar. Hence, the claim made in the post is FALSE.
To learn more about this viral video, we conducted a Google reverse image search using keyframes from the video. This search led us to a post on Twitter (now X) from 30 June 2024, which shared the same viral video. The Portuguese caption of the post, when translated to English, reads: “MACABRE: Criminal records video of a man known as ‘Olhao’ being murdered in the Novo Aleixo neighbourhood, in Manaus.”
Taking a cue from this, we ran a relevant keyword search and came across a news report by ‘Portaltucuma’ published on 28 June 2024, titled “VIDEO: PCC gunmen film ‘Olhao’ execution in Manaus.” According to this report, the incident occurred on 28 June 2024. The victim from the viral video, identified as Lucas Pereira, also known as Olhao, was murdered by unknown PCC gunmen while working at a commercial location on Penetraçao 2 street, Novo Aleixo neighbourhood, Manaus, Brazil. The report states that the shooters filmed the video themselves. So far, there is no information about the motives behind the crime or the identity of the gunmen. Additional news reports about this incident can be found here. Based on this information, it is clear that the viral video shows a man being shot by a gunman in Brazil.
During our search, we also found a post on X(Twitter) by the Muzaffarnagar police confirming that the video was not from Muzaffarnagar. The post reads: “A video of a person being shot dead is going viral on social media, with claims that it is from New Mandi police station in the Muzaffarnagar district. However, this claim is false. Legal action is being taken against the person who shared the misleading video, and a case has been registered at New Mandi police station.” (translated from Hindi to English).
To sum up, a video of a man being shot in Brazil is being falsely shared, linking it to India.
