CCTV footage (here and here) of a passenger train crashing into a platform is being shared widely on social media lately. Sharing this video clip, users have been asking the Indian Railway Minister ‘Ashwini Vaishnav,’ what is going on with the railways. This comes after the recent train accidents in West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh. We fact-check this claim through this article.

Claim: The Viral video shows a recent train accident in India in 2024.

Fact: This video is from 2015 and shows derailing of a local train in Mumbai and overshooting the Churchgate railway station platform. Hence, the claim made in the post is False.

To check the veracity of the viral claim, we performed a reverse image search using a few of the viral video’s keyframes. This search led us to a few news reports (here, here, and here) on this video from 2015.

BBC News reported that the ‘Footage shows a passenger train at Mumbai’s Churchgate station overshooting the platform and injuring several people.’

As per the reports, this footage was released by the authorities at the Churchgate station, who stated that the reason for the incident was a human error. This train was coming from Bhayander and hit a dead end which led to the injury of five passengers. The motorman, the train guard, and the loco inspector were suspended by the Western Railways.

Furthermore, we also found that, on 23 July 2024, the Ministry of Railways clarified on ‘X’ that this video is old and requested people to refrain from spreading misinformation.

To sum up, a video from 2015 is falsely being shared as a recent video of a train accident in India.
