A video is being shared on social media claiming it is the visuals of a person threatening to attack people and police with a knife in a crowded public place in Uttar Pradesh. Let’s verify the claim made in the post.

Claim: Video of a person threatening to attack people and police with a knife in Uttar Pradesh.

Fact: The incident shown in the video took place on 05 February 2023, in the crowded market area in Kalaburagi, Karnataka. The accused, Mohammed Fazal Jafar, was shot, given treatment and later arrested by the Kalaburagi police. The video has nothing to do with Uttar Pradesh. Hence, the claim made in the post is False.

On reverse image search of the screenshots in the video, a video with similar visuals was found tweeted by the ‘Indian Express’ journalist Kiran Parashar on 06 February 2023. Kiran Parashar tweeted the video with the description, “#Karnataka Police open fire at a man who threatened and tried to attack public with knives in Kalaburgi. While the talks failed, police opened fire at his leg. The arrested is Jaffer and probe underway”. ‘The News Minute’ published the same video with the title, “Karnataka police opens fire at man brandishing knife | Kalaburagi”.

Reporting the complete details of the incident, ‘The Indian Express’ and many other news websites have published articles. As per these reports, Mohammed Fazal Jafar, a fruit vendor and resident of Kalaburagi, threatened to attack locals with a knife around 9 pm on 05 February 2023 in the Kalaburagi market area. Upon receiving information from the public, the Kalaburagi police immediately reached the spot. When the accused tried to attack them with the knife, in an act of self-defence and for the safety of the public, police officials reportedly opened fire at him and injured him. He was given treatment and later taken into police custody.

Speaking to the media, Kalaburagi Commissioner said, “Control room received a call about Fazal roaming with knives and threatening the general public. As police reached the spot, they asked him to drop the weapons but he was trying to attack the public near a supermarket. When he did not listen to the police and tried to attack, the police opened fire at his leg.” From all these pieces of evidence, it can be concluded that the video shared in the post shows an incident in Karnataka but not Uttar Pradesh as claimed in the post.

To sum it up, a video from Karnataka’s Kalaburagi was shared as the visuals of a man threatening people with a knife in Uttar Pradesh.
