A video (here, here and here) circulating on social media alleges that Haryana Congress MP Selja Kumari was confronted by the public, who demanded ₹8,500 each, as promised by the Congress party if they were elected to power. The video further shows individuals breaking down the door to enter the office. Let’s verify the claim made in the post.

Archived post can be seen here

Claim: Haryana Congress MP Kumari Selja was confronted by a crowd demanding Rs. 8500 each, who broke into her office premises.

Fact: The video is from a press conference held on 13 June 2024, in Tohana, Fatehpur, Haryana, where Sirsa MP Selja Kumari was expressing gratitude to her supporters after winning the election. This incident is unrelated to the Congress-proposed Mahalaxmi scheme. Instead, supporters of another Congress leader, Paramvir Singh, reportedly broke the glass panel of the door when Singh was allegedly locked outside the room. Therefore, the claim made in the post is FALSE.

The Congress party had promised in its manifesto during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections that it would give Rs. 1 lakh annually (or Rs. 8,500 per month) to the woman heading every poor family under the Mahalaxmi scheme if it formed the government. However, in the election results announced on 04 June 2024, the I.N.D.I.A bloc did not secure a majority, and the NDA formed the government at the Center for the third time. This video is being shared amid news reports (here & here) about women lining up at the Congress party office in Lucknow, to get ‘guarantee cards’ regarding the cash transfer promise made by the Congress during the election campaign.

To verify the claim, we performed a reverse image search of keyframes extracted from the viral video and found that the incident occurred during a press conference on 13 June 2024, in Tohana, Fatehpur. During this press conference, Selja Kumari was seen thanking the people and party cadre for their support in her victory in the Sirsa parliamentary constituency.

However, according to media reports (here, here, and here), most leaders entered the conference room, but Congress leader and former minister Paramvir Singh and his supporters were left outside. When Selja Kumari started the conference, Paramvir Singh and his supporters began thumping and pushing the door, causing a disturbance. Despite Selja’s attempts to calm the situation, the glass panel of the door eventually broke. After entering, Paramvir Singh complained that the door had been locked, but Selja insisted it hadn’t been. She finally agreed to investigate the matter and urged everyone to take the matter lightly.

Previously, Factly has debunked the claims (here, here and here) related to the congress-proposed Mahalaxmi scheme.

To sum up, an unrelated video is being shared, falsely claiming that the public confronted Congress MP Kumari Selja’s office demanding ₹8,500 under the Mahalakshmi scheme.
