A video is being shared on social media claiming it as recent visuals of two men brandishing guns and threatening people during the Kanpur violence in Uttar Pradesh. In the wake of the recent Kanpur violence over the BJP spokesperson’s comments on Prophet Muhammed, this video is viral on social media. Let’s verify the claim made in the post.

Claim: Recent video of two men brandishing guns and threatening people during the Kanpur violence.

Fact: The video shared in the post shows an old incident that took place at Dhaura Tanda town in the Bareilly district of Uttar Pradesh. This video was shot on 09 May 2021, during a brawl that took place between two parties of the same community over purchase of meat. The video is old and has nothing to do with the recent Kanpur violence. Hence, the claim made in the post is FALSE.

On reverse image search of the screenshots in the video, a video with similar visuals was found published by ‘Dainik Bhaskar UP-UK’ YouTube channel on 10 May 2021. This channel reported it as visuals of a fierce scuffle that broke out between two parties of same community in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh. The scuffle reportedly took place over the purchase of meat.

When we searched for further details using relevant keywords on the internet, we found the more details of this incident in an article published by the ‘Amar Ujala’ on 12 May 2021. Sharing a picture from the incident, ‘Amar Ujala’ reported that amidst the lockdown, a dispute had broken out between two parties from the same community in Dhaura Thanda town of the Bareilly district. According to the details provided in the article, Jaleesh Ahmed had given his shop for rent to Salim Qureshi on a condition that he should sell the meat legally. On 09 May 2021, upon the allegations of Salim Qureshi selling his meat for higher prices, Jaleesh Ahmed asked Salim Qureshi to vacate the shop immediately. This led to the scuffle and the people of the same community started beating up Salim Qureshi. Meanwhile, in support of Salim, his family members reached the place with weapons and started threatening people by firing in the air. Reporting the details of the incident, Bareilly police tweeted a video on 09 May 2021.

Lately, when this one-year-old video was being shared on social media linking to the Kanpur violence, Bareilly police through a tweet clarified that the video is old and had nothing to do with the recent Kanpur riots.
