A video is being shared on social media claiming it as recent visuals of a Muslim man threatening a police officer in the Jahangirpuri area of Delhi. This video shows a heated argument between a Muslim mob and a Policeman where a Muslim man is seen threatening a policeman to meet him without a uniform. In the wake of the recent communal violence in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri area, this video is being widely shared on social media. Let’s verify the claim made in the post.
Claim: Recent video of a Muslim man threatening a policeman in the Jahangirpuri area in Delhi.
Fact: The video shared in the post shows an old incident that took place at the Chopda bus stand in the Jalgaon district of Maharashtra. In September 2018, a heated argument took place between a policeman and a fruit vendor family for placing a tempo at the location where buses exit from the Chopda bus stand. The video shared in the post is old and has nothing to do with the recent communal violence that took place in the Jahangirpuri area in Delhi. Hence, the claim made in the post is FALSE.
On reverse image search of the screenshots in the video, videos with similar visuals were found posted on social media at least since 2018. They can be seen here and here. So, it can be confirmed that the video shared in the post is an old one. A Facebook user had shared this video mentioning that the incident had taken place at Chopda town bus stand in the Jalgaon district of Maharashtra.
On observing the video carefully, it can be noticed that the logo seen on the policeman’s uniform matches the official police logo of the Maharashtra Police.
We contacted the Chopda city police station to find out whether any such incident had taken place at the Chopda Bus stand. The Chopda police officials have confirmed to us that the incident did take place at Chopda Bus stand in 2018. They said that the name of the police constable involved in the incident as Srikant Gangurde and provided his number. We contacted Srikant Gangurde for further clarification regarding the incident. Speaking to FACTLY, Srikant Gangurde said, “The incident took place in 2018. The argument started after a fruit vendor had stalled a tempo at the location where buses exit from the Chopda bus stand. The tempo was blocking buses to exit, so, I asked the fruit vendor to remove the vehicle from the path. The fruit vendor refused to remove it and called his father and grandfather and we got into an argument. Alleging that I had beaten his son, the fruit vendor’s father threatened me that he would act against me. A case has been filed on this incident”. From all these pieces of evidence, it can be concluded that the video shared in the video is old and not related to the recent communal riots that took place in the Jahangirpuri area in Delhi.
To sum it up, an unrelated old video from Maharashtra is shared as recent visuals of a Muslim man threatening a policeman in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri area.
UPDATE (21 April 2022)
The same video is also being shared attributing the incident to the failure of the Uddhav Thackeray led Maharashtra government. Since the incident was reported in 2018 when Uddhav Thackeray was not the CM of Maharashtra, this claim is also FALSE.
