On 26 May 2025 (here, here), the National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested Moti Ram Jat, a CRPF personnel, for allegedly sharing sensitive national security information with Pakistani intelligence since 2023. This arrest comes amid heightened India-Pakistan tensions following the 2025 Pahalgam terrorist attack. The NIA is investigating the extent of the breach and potential involvement of others, highlighting ongoing challenges in protecting internal security during sensitive times.
Amid this, a video circulating on social media (here, here, and here) shows police officers accompanying two men. In the background, someone asks one of the men if he has anything to say about the hefty sum of ₹96 crore seized from his house. This video is being shared with claims that two Border Security Force (BSF) soldiers suspected of spying for Pakistan have been apprehended. Let’s verify the claim made in the post through this article.

Claim: The video shows two BSF soldiers caught with ₹96 lakh on a train or ₹96 crore found in their houses in 2025.
Fact: The viral video dates back to January 2018 and shows Kanpur police seizing ₹96 crore in demonetised currency from builder Anand Khatri and others. No BSF personnel were involved in that incident. While a BSF Commandant named Jibu D Mathew was arrested in 2018 with ₹45.3 lakh at Alleppey railway station, Kerala, in a separate corruption case, it has no connection to the viral video. Additionally, we found no reports of two BSF soldiers caught with ₹96 lakh on a train or ₹96 crore found in their houses recently in 2025. Hence, the claim made in the post is FALSE.
A reverse image search of the keyframes from the viral video led us to the same video, uploaded on a YouTube channel named Taak Jhank on 27 January 2018. The description read: “Breaking News: ₹96.40 crore recovered from Anand Khatri, builder of Kanpur”, confirming that the video is old and not recent.
We then used relevant keywords and found multiple reports (here, here, and here) confirming that in January 2018, Kanpur police seized ₹96 crore in old currency from a house in Swaroop Nagar. SSP Akhilesh Kumar Meena stated that ₹95 crore belonged to builder Anand Khatri and others, who were booked under various sections. This was reportedly the biggest seizure since the demonetisation of ₹500 and ₹1,000 notes in 2016. Sixteen people from UP, West Bengal, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh were arrested. However, none of the reports mentioned the BSF personnel link.

In our investigation, we also found that in January 2018, the CBI arrested Jibu D Mathew, a Commandant with the Border Security Force (BSF), at Alappuzha railway station in Kerala after seizing ₹45.3 lakh in cash from his luggage. Mathew, who was serving with the BSF’s 83rd Battalion on the India–Bangladesh border in West Bengal, was allegedly receiving bribes from cross-border smugglers. The seized cash included ₹2,000 and ₹500 denomination notes, and an additional ₹1.5 lakh was later recovered from his residence. The CBI registered a case under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, stating that Mathew had amassed assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.
However, we did not find any reports of two BSF soldiers carrying ₹96 lakh in cash or of any of their houses being raided with ₹96 crore seized in 2025.
To sum up, this viral video shows officials seizing ₹96 crore in demonetised currency from a Kanpur builder’s house in 2018; none of the accused were BSF soldiers.
