This letter claiming to be a CBI officer’s request for withdrawal from the RG Kar rape case probe is fake

A letter bearing the Central Bureau of Investigation logo is circulating on social media purportedly representing the resignation of Dr. Akash Nag, the Deputy Inspector General and Joint Director of the Crime Branch of CBI in Kolkata. The letter claims that Dr. Nag resigned because he was unable to investigate the RG Kar hospital rape case impartially and sought to withdraw from the probe. Let’s verify the claim made in the post.

Claim: Dr. Akash Nag, the Deputy Inspector General and Joint Director of the Crime Branch of CBI in Kolkata resigned because he felt unable to investigate the RG Kar hospital rape case impartially and sought to withdraw from the probe.

Fact: This is a Fake letter. The PIB and Central Beauru of Investigation clarified that the case was being handled by its Delhi headquarters and there was no officer named Akash Nag. Hence, the claim made in the post is False.

A search using the relevant keywords for the viral claim found no reports of an officer named Dr. Akash Nag resigning due to difficulties in investigating the case. On the other hand, media reports indicate that the RG Kar hospital rape case was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation on 14 August 2024, and was not investigated by the Kolkata Crime Branch as stated in the viral post (here and here).

Further research led us to an X post by PIB confirming that the viral letter was fake. The CBI also addressed the issue through an X post, stating “A fake letter in the name of a person named Dr. Akash Nag and claiming to be DIG (Deputy Inspector-General, Joint Director, Crime Branch, Kolkata, under the official banner ‘Central Bureau of Investigation, Office of the Deputy Inspector General, Anti Corruption Branch, Kolkata’ and addressed to Union Home Secretary is circulating in social media through Whatsapp, etc, about the case related to rape and murder of a trainee doctor of RG Kar Hospital, Kolkata.”

News reports were also published stating that this purported letter is Fake (here and here).

To sum up, a letter claiming to be a CBI officer’s resignation from the RG Kar rape case probe is fake.
