A video featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman discussing the figures of houses constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana (PMAY) is being circulated on social media. The post suggests that manipulated numbers regarding houses built under the scheme are being presented to the public. Let’s verify the claim made in the post.

Claim: The budget speeches by Prime Minister Modi and Nirmala Sitharaman indicate discrepancies in the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana figures.

Fact: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman provided details about the number of houses constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana (Grameen) while Prime Minister Modi’s comments covered homes built by the government for individuals in need, without specific classification into urban or rural areas. The combined number of houses under both Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana Gramin and Urban is approximately four crores. Hence, the claim made in the post is MISLEADING.

Upon conducting a relevant keyword search related to the claim, we discovered that both speeches were delivered during the 2024 budget session in the parliament. After carefully listening to the speeches, we observed that Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman provided details about the number of houses constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana- Grameen on 1 February 2024, while Prime Minister Modi’s comments on 5 February 2024 covered homes built by the government for individuals in need, without specific classification into urban or rural areas.

The finance minister during her budget speech said, “We are close to achieving the target of 3 crore under the rural housing scheme. Two crore more would be constructed in the next five years,”.

On the other hand, PM Modi stated that “Presently, four crore individuals from the economically backward sections are provided houses. A home provides renewed strength to one’s self-respect.”

Further investigation into the PMAY, both in rural (PMAY-G) and urban (PMAY-U) areas, the data reveals that 3.24 crore people have registered under PMAY-G. Funds have been sanctioned for 2.94 crore houses in rural areas, of which 2.55 crore are fully constructed. In urban areas, 118 lakh houses are sanctioned, 114 lakhs are in progress, and 80.02 lakh have been completed under PMAY-U. The combined number of houses under both Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana Gramin and Urban is approximately four crores.
