A video featuring a young man showing a knife to a woman is being shared on social media (here, here, and here) claiming that a Muslim boy threatened to kill a Hindu woman who had set up a cart on the road in the Sultanpur area of Delhi. Let’s verify the claim made in the post.

Claim: A Muslim boy threatened to kill a Hindu woman who had set up a cart on the road in the Sultanpur area of Delhi. 

Fact: The incident took place on 22 September 2024 in the Sultanpuri area of Delhi. There is no communal angle involved. One of the three accused has been identified as Rakesh. The victim and all three accused belong to the same religion (Hindu). An FIR has been registered, and two of the accused have been arrested, one of whom is a minor. The search is ongoing for the third accused. Hence, the claim made in the post is FALSE.

On performing a reverse image search using the keyframes of the viral video, we found news published by News18 on its official YouTube channel on 3 October 2024. As per the news report, this incident occurred on 22 September 2024 in the Sultanpuri area of Delhi. The description of the video mentioned that the incident of showing a knife to a woman in broad daylight in Sultanpuri market went viral, and Delhi Police took action on it. In this case, the police have arrested two youths, one of them is a minor and one accused is still absconding.

Further research revealed several news reports (here, here, and here) about a viral video involving a 28-year-old shop owner named Mamta Devi from the DDA market in Sultanpuri. One of the three accused is identified as Rakesh, who is 19 years old. According to the reports, two of the suspects have been arrested based on Mamta’s statement, while the third is still being sought by the police.

A subsequent search led us to the official X handle of Outer Delhi DCP, the police clarified that Raj Park police arrested two accused in connection with threatening a shopkeeper with a knife. BOOM contacted the Raj Park police station in the Sultanpuri area and quoted Station in-charge Virendra Singh who clarified that there is no communal angle in this incident. The victim and the three accused belong to the same religion (Hindu). This incident occurred on 22 September. An FIR has been registered in the case and two accused have been arrested. One accused is being searched.” Further, We verified from the FIR that both the accused and the victim belong to the same community, and no communal motive is involved.

To sum up, there is no communal angle to the incident involving a young man threatening a woman with a knife.
