A video (here, here and here) is going viral on social media showing Rahul Gandhi addressing a public meeting, where he allegedly calls the Rath Yatra in Puri, Odisha, a ‘drama’. Let’s find out the truth behind this video.

The archived post can be found here.

Claim: The viral video shows Rahul Gandhi calling the Rath Yatra in Puri, Odisha a “drama,” suggesting he insulted the religious tradition.

Fact: The viral video is clipped and shared without context. In the full original, Rahul Gandhi criticises Adani, alleging the Rath Yatra was halted to accommodate him and calls that act a “drama” — not the Yatra itself. Multiple news reports also confirm the same. Hence the claim is FALSE.

To verify the truth, we conducted a keyword search on Google, which led us to the full version of the viral video. It was streamed on the Indian National Congress YouTube channel on 11 July 2025, with the title “LIVE: Shri Mallikarjun Kharge & Shri Rahul Gandhi | Samvidhan Bachao Samavesh | Bhubaneswar, Odisha.”

In this video, at the 26:03 timestamp, the clip from the viral video can be heard. However, when we listen to the speech in full context, it becomes clear that Rahul Gandhi was not criticising the Rath Yatra itself. Just before the viral portion begins, he is heard saying that Adani controls both the Odisha government and Narendra Modi. He goes on to claim that during the Rath Yatra at the Jagannath temple, the procession was stopped for the sake of Ambani and his team, and he calls that act a ‘drama’, referring to the alleged political influence, not the religious tradition.

We also found the same video uploaded on the Indian National Congress Facebook page, with the same caption. In this version too, Rahul Gandhi can be heard criticising Adani, alleging that the Rath Yatra was halted to accommodate him, but he does not insult the Rath Yatra itself. Several news reports have also covered this incident (here, here, and here), with headlines highlighting Rahul Gandhi’s remark about Lord Jagannath’s chariot being halted for Adani, and his claim that the state is being controlled by corporates like Adani.

To verify this further, we looked into reports about the annual Rath Yatra at the Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha. According to news coverage, Gautam Adani and his family visited Puri during the Rath Yatra on 27 June 2025 (here, here and here). In this context, the Congress party alleged that the delay was deliberately orchestrated to allow Adani’s participation, while the BJP denied these claims and accused the Opposition of politicising a sacred event.

From all this, it is clear that the viral video has been clipped and shared without context to mislead viewers.

To sum up, the video of Rahul Gandhi calling the Rath Yatra at the Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha, a “drama” is a clipped piece of his speech and has been shared without context to mislead viewers.
