An image is being shared widely on Facebook with the claim that it shows Mahameru flower that blooms once every 400 years in the Himalayas. Let’s check the authenticity of that claim.
Claim: Image of Mahameru flower that blooms once every 400 years in the Himalayas.
Fact: The plant in the image is ‘Rheum Nobile/ Sikkim Rhubarb/Noble Rhubarb’, it blooms every year in the Himalayas. So, the claim is FALSE.
When the image in the post is subjected to reverse image search technique, it was found on the website of Amazon. From here, the name of that plant was found to be ‘Rheum Nobile/ Sikkim Rhubarb/Noble Rhubarb’.
When searched on Google with the name of that plant, a website ‘Flowers of India’ was obtained in the search results. On that website, more details about the plant can be seen. From here, it was found that the plant grows in the Himalayas. From the website of ‘Plants for a future’, it can be found that those plants bloom every year during July- August.
In the post, ‘Pagoda Flower’ was also mentioned and the details of it can be seen on the website of ‘Almost Eden Plants’. By looking at the picture of ‘Pagoda flower’, it can be concluded that the plant in the post is not ‘Pagoda flower’.
During the search process, no information was found about the existence of ‘Mahameru Flowers’ in the Himalayas. Earlier, when a different image was also circulated as that of ‘Mahameru Flower’, FACTLY has written a fact-check article and it can be read here. Also, when an image of sea creature was shared on social media as that of ‘Cobra flower’, ‘FACTLY’ had debunked it and that can be read here.
To conclude, the plant in the image is ‘Sikkim Rhubarb’, it blooms every year in the Himalayas.
