A video is being shared widely on social media with a claim that Rahul Gandhi in his speech said – ‘Mahatma Gandhi picked up non-violence from Islam’. Let’s fact-check the claim made in the post.

The archived version of this post can be found here

Claim: Video shows Rahul Gandhi saying that Mahatma Gandhi picked up non-violence from Islam.

Fact: It is a clipped video. In the full video, it can be seen that Rahul Gandhi mentions several sources (‘from our great religions, from our great teachers……from ancient Indian philosophy, from Islam, from Christianity, from Judaism, from every great religion, where it is clearly written that violence will not help anyone achieve anything’) from where Mahatma Gandhi has picked up the idea of non-violence. Hence the claim made in the post is MISLEADING.

When the screenshots of the video were run through Google Reverse Image, a similar visual was found to be posted by ‘ANI’ in their tweet regarding Rahul Gandhi’s speech in Dubai in January 2019.

So, when we searched on the internet with the relevant keywords, the extended version of the posted video was found to uploaded by the ‘Indian National Congress’ YouTube channel in January 2019 with the title – ‘Congress President Rahul Gandhi addresses Indian diaspora in Dubai’. In the full video, it can be seen that Rahul Gandhi says – ‘Mahatma Gandhi picked up the idea of non-violence from our great religions, from our great teachers. Mahatma Gandhi picked up the idea of non-violence from ancient Indian philosophy, from Islam, from Christianity, from Judaism, from every great religion, where it is clearly written that violence will not help anyone achieve anything.’ So, he mentions the names of other religions, not just Islam.  The posted video has been clipped conveniently to leave out his other words.

To sum it up, a clipped video misleads that Rahul Gandhi just said, ‘Mahatma Gandhi picked up non-violence from Islam’.
