A viral photo (here, here and here) circulating on social media shows a young woman with a severe eye injury, along with the claim that she is a Hindu woman from Bangladesh who married a Muslim man against her family’s wishes. According to the post’s claim, two months after the marriage, her husband allegedly gouged out her eye, and she is now seen wandering around Bangladesh. Let’s investigate the truth behind this claim.

Claim: The photo shows a Hindu woman from Bangladesh who was attacked by her Muslim Husband, and who gouged out her eye.
Fact: The woman in the viral photo is Bangladeshi digital creator Adrita Azad Rithi, who clarified in a Facebook post that she is a Muslim by birth and suffered the injury in a road accident, not due to any assault. Her husband, Mohammad Abu Sufyan, also filed a police complaint against those spreading false narratives using her image. Multiple media outlets and the Bangladesh Cyber Security Team have confirmed that the claim is baseless and falsely linked to ‘love jihad’. Hence, the claim is FALSE.
To verify the authenticity of the photo and the accompanying narrative, we performed a reverse image search on Google. This led us to the same image posted by Bangladeshi digital creator Adritha Azad Reethi on her official Facebook page on 18 April 2025. According to the caption, Reethi was injured on the night of 17 April 2025, when a boy wearing a helmet and skating near Sony Cineplex accidentally collided with her. The impact of the helmet caused an injury to her right eye. This explanation was provided by her husband, who posted the details on her behalf.

Further investigation led us to another Facebook post by Adrita Azad Reethi herself, where she directly refuted the viral claim. In her post, she stated, “I am a Muslim by birth. My National ID card clearly shows my father’s name is Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad and my mother’s name is Salma Sultana. No one assaulted me. I was injured in an accident on the 17th. But Hindutva activists are using my photos to spread false news. Please stop spreading such misinformation.”

Adding more context, Joy Rajbonshi, who identifies as the general secretary of the Bangladesh Hindu Chhatra Mahajot, also addressed the viral claims in a Facebook post. He shared a copy of a police complaint filed by Reethi’s husband, Mohammad Abu Suhian, at Dhaka’s Pallabi Police Station on 18 April 2025. The complaint confirmed that Reethi was seriously injured in a road accident and raised concerns about individuals misusing her photos to propagate false stories about her marriage and religious identity. The complaint requested appropriate legal action and protection for the family.

We also found an X post by Bangladeshi fact-checker Shohanur Rahman, who shared the viral image and reiterated that the woman in the photo is a Muslim by birth and was recently injured in an accident.

Additionally, the Bangladesh Cyber Security Team addressed the incident in a Facebook post, and expressed concern over the spread of such misinformation.

To sum up, a photo of a Muslim woman injured in an accident is falsely shared as that of a Hindu woman attacked by her Muslim husband in Bangladesh.
