Old visuals of family members attacking two sisters is shared alleging caste discrimination

A social media post accompanying a video of a woman being brutally beaten with sticks by a group of men is being shared claiming that ‘the woman is being beaten from bathing in river and contaminating the water’. The same video is also being shared alleging that the video shows Hindu extremists beating a poor Dalit woman. Through this article let’s fact-check the claim made in the post.

Claim: Visuals showing a Dalit girl being beaten for bathing in river and contaminating the water.

Fact: These visuals are related to an old incident from 2021 wherein two sisters from a tribal community in Pipalwa village of Dhar district, MP were beaten brutally by their family members for talking to their maternal uncle’s sons on the phone. The incident took place in July 2021 and there is no caste discrimination associated to the incident. Hence, the claim made in the post is FALSE.

These visuals are related an old incident, which was reported in Madhya Pradesh’s Dhar district in July 2021. There is no caste discrimination associated with the incident as alleged in the viral post. Google search with relevant keywords yielded multiple news reports that reported the same visuals back in July 2021 (here, here & here).

According to these reports, the visuals show two sisters from a tribal community in Pipalwa village of Dhar district, being beaten brutally by their family members for talking to their maternal uncle’s sons on the phone. As the video went viral, the police took cognisance and filed cases against the family members.

To sum it up, old visuals of family members attacking two sisters is being shared with a false narrative alleging caste discrimination.
