A video is being shared on social media claiming it as recent visuals of people in Srinagar bursting firecrackers and celebrating Pakistan’s victory against India in the super 4s of the T20 Asia Cup 2022. In the wake of Pakistan’s victory against India in the match held as part of the T20 Asia Cup on 04 September 2022, this video is going viral on social media. Let’s verify the claim made in the post.

Claim: Recent video showing people in Srinagar celebrating after Pakistan’s victory against India in the Asia Cup 2022.

Fact: Several local Jammu & Kashmir news websites published the same video in August 2020 and reported it as the visuals of Pakistan Independence Day celebrations at the Nawakadal Chowk in Srinagar. Srinagar Police through a tweet clarified that the video is old and is not related to the recent India-Pakistan match held on 04 September 2022. Hence, the claim made in the post is FALSE.

On reverse image search of the screenshots of the video, a video with similar visuals was found posted by a Facebook user on 14 August 2020. This Facebook user reported it as the visuals of Pakistan Independence Day celebrations in Downtown, Srinagar. When we searched for further sources using relevant keywords, we found that several Kashmiri local news websites have published the same video with a similar description in August 2020. They can be seen here, here and here. This video was reportedly shot at the Nawakadal Chowk in Srinagar.

When ‘Sudarshan News’ journalist Sagar Kumar tweeted this video describing it as recent visuals from Srinagar after Pakistan’s victory against India in the Asia Cup, Srinagar Police responded to his tweet and clarified that the video is old and that no such celebrations were reported after Pakistan victory against India in the Asia Cup. In another tweet, Srinagar police said, “The video is half a decade old from Nawakadal chowk. Don’t spread fake news and sensationalism by circulating old videos. Nothing of this sort reported from anywhere”.

In June 2017, after Pakistan won against India in the ICC Champions Trophy, people in Kashmir bursted firecrackers and celebrated the victory of Pakistan over India. A few news reports related to those celebrations can be seen here and here. Though we could not ascertain the exact date on which the video was shot, it can be confirmed that the video shared in the post is old and does not show any recent celebrations after Pakistan won against India in the Asia Cup 2022.
