In the context of Brazil’s elimination in the Quarter final of FIFA World Cup 2022, a video of a group of people throwing eggs at a bus is being widely shared on social media with a claim that it shows fans showing anger at the Brazilian Football team after their arrival at Brazil. Similar posts can be seen here and here. Let’s verify the claim made in the post.
Claim: Fans throwing eggs at the bus carrying the Brazilian Football team in Brazil following the team’s elimination from FIFA World Cup 2022.
Fact: This video was recorded in March 2018 in Brazil. It shows protestors in Brazil attacking a bus with eggs, believing that it was a part of ex-president Lula’s convoy. Also, no such incident of fans throwing eggs at the Brazilian football team was reported following their elimination from the World cup 2022. Hence the claim made in the post is FALSE.
We ran a reverse image search using the keyframes of the viral video and found that the same video was already uploaded on YouTube on 28 March 2018. The title says that the people of Paraná were throwing eggs at the bus carrying Lula (ex-president of Brazil).
Another video of this incident recorded by a passenger inside the bus can be seen here. According to Brazilian media, on 26 March 2018, a group of protestors in the state of “Paraná attacked a bus by mistaking it as a part of Lula’s convoy during election campaign”.
Moreover, no such incident of fans throwing eggs at the Brazilian football team was reported following their elimination from the FIFA World cup 2022.
To sum it up, an old unrelated video is falsely shared as fans throwing eggs at the defeated Brazil team.
