Old unrelated video falsely shared as ‘demolition of houses of people excluded from Assam’s NRC’

A video is being shared on social media with a claim that it shows the demolition of houses that belonged to the people whose names were not included in the NRC (National Register of Citizens) list of Assam. Let’s try to analyze the claim made in the post.

The archived version of the post can be found here.

Claim: Demolition of houses of people who were not included in the NRC list of Assam.

Fact: The video was telecasted by ‘News 18 Assam/Northeast’ in November-2017 whereas the final NRC list of Assam was published in August-2019. It is related to the eviction drive carried out by the Assam government, in 2017, in and around Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary (Guwahati) as it was declared as an eco-sensitive zone (ECZ) by the Environment Ministry. Hence the claim made in the post is FALSE.

When the screenshots of the video were run through the Yandex Reverse Image Search, the same video uploaded by ‘News 18 Assam/Northeast’ was found in the search results. The video was uploaded in November-2017 with the title – ‘Eviction Tragedy’. The final NRC list of Assam was published in August-2019. So, the video is not related to NRC as the incident in the video took place before the final NRC list was published. When searched for the eviction drive which happened in Assam in November-2017, it was found that, as per a Guwahati High Court order, the Assam government carried out an eviction drive in and around Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary (Guwahati) as it was declared as an eco-sensitive zone (ECZ) by the Environment Ministry.

Previously, when a similar eviction video from Assam was shared as ‘Assam NRC eviction’, FACTLY has debunked the viral video and written a fact-check article, which can be read here.

To sum it up, an old unrelated video falsely shared as “demolition of houses of people excluded from Assam’s NRC”.
