NRI voters cannot vote online in the 2019 General Elections

A circular as said to be issued by the Election Commission of India is being circulated on several social media platforms since the past few days mentioning that NRIs can vote online for 2019 elections. Let’s try to analyse the authenticity of it.

Claim: All the NRIs who hold Indian passport can vote online for the 2019 elections

Fact: The Election Commission of India’s website carried a disclaimer to be aware of the fake news in social media informing that the NRIs who hold Indian passport, can vote online for 2019 elections. Hence the claims made in the post is FALSE

When searched for any notice from  Election Commission of India regarding the provision of allowing NRIs who hold Indian passport to vote for the 2019 elections, a disclaimer was found in its website warning people to be aware of the fake news in social media informing that those who hold Indian passport, can vote online for 2019 elections. It clarified that “There is no online voting facility for any category of voter. Overseas Indians may submit application for their enrolment in form 6A online at nvsp.in or by using Voter helpline mobile app.To cast the vote on the date of poll an overseas elector may come to his/her designated Polling station with his/her Passport as document for identification.”  ECI spokesperson Sheyphali Sharan also confirmed the same through the following tweets

Finally, the NRIs who hold Indian passport are not entitled to vote online in the 2019 elections.
