A video of a Policeman being hit with sticks by a mob is being shared widely on Facebook and the claim is that the Policeman was attacked by them for issuing a challan. Let’s try to analyze the claim made in the post.

The archived version of the post can be found here.

Claim: Video of Policeman being attacked by a mob for issuing a challan.

Fact: The Policeman was attacked when a dalit youth died under mysterious circumstances during a raid conducted on a gambling den by Police in Dabholi, Surat. Hence, the claim is FALSE.

When searched in Google with keywords ‘Police beaten by mob’, many search results were obtained. The search result of ‘AajTak’ news had the same clip in its news video that was uploaded on July 25, 2016. As per the video, a dalit youth had died under mysterious circumstances during a raid conducted on a gambling den by Police in Dabholi area in Surat. Aggrieved by this, the locals there have attacked the sub-inspector, accusing him of ‘thrashing’ the youth.

The same can also be read in the article of ‘Firstpost’ that reported the incident. So, this video has nothing to do with the claim that the Policeman was attacked by the mob for issuing a challan.

To conclude, the video doesn’t show a Policeman being attacked for issuing a challan.
