Claim: No action was taken against those who wrote ‘Ram’ on the goat seen in the viral photo.
Fact: This incident reportedly happened in the CBD Belapur area of Mumbai. On 15 June 2024, a mutton shop in CBD Belapur reportedly tried to sell a goat, on which the word ‘Ram’ was written. Police registered a case against the shop’s owner and arrested three people in relation to this, which contradicts the viral claim. Hence, the claim made in the post is Misleading.
To check the veracity of the viral claim, we searched the internet with relevant keywords. This search led us to several news reports (here, here, and here) on this incident.
As per the reports, ‘The incident took place at the “Goodluck Goat Meat Shop” in the Central Business District of Belapur, owned by Muhammad Shafi. On June 15, members of a Hindu organization found a white goat with the word “Ram” inscribed in yellow on its back, indicating it was intended for sacrifice. The scene was captured on video by the Hindu group, and it has since gone viral on social media.’
Subsequently, a complaint was filed by Bajrang Dal against the owner of the meat shop at the CBD Belapur police station, stating that ‘the owner of a mutton shop in Mumbai had insulted Hindu deities.’
Reportedly, police registered a case (here and here) under the CBD Belapur police station with the FIR number 123/2024. They have arrested three men in this incident for ‘hurting religious sentiments’ and under the ‘ Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.’
To sum up, action was taken by the police in the incident where ‘RAM’ was written on a Goat in a mutton shop in Mumbai.
