Fact: According to the official e-SHRAM portal, holders of eSHRAM card, which is issued for unorganised workers, will get an Accidental Insurance cover of 2 Lakh rupees under Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bhima Yojana. Also, one of the objectives of this portal is to share the data of these unorganised workers with various government departments in order to improve the implementation of various social security schemes meant for them. It is nowhere mentioned that the e-SHRAM card holders are eligible for a pension of ₹5000 just by merely registering on this portal. Hence the claim made in the post is FALSE.
What is e-SHRAM card?
According to e-SHRAM portal, it is the card issued for the unorganised workers who successfully register on e-SHRAM portal. This card contains the 12-digit Universal Account Number (UAN) uniquely assigned to each unorganized worker after registration on this portal. UAN is a permanent number and will remain unchanged for the worker’s lifetime. Registration has commenced on e-SHRAM portal from 26 August 2021.
Benefits of registering in e-SHRAM portal:
After registration, he/she will get an Accidental Insurance cover of 2 Lakh rupees under Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bhima Yojana (PMSBY). In future, all the social security benefits of unorganized workers will be delivered through this portal. In emergency and national pandemic like situations, this database may be utilized to provide necessary assistance to the eligible unorganized workers.
Eligibility criteria to register in e-SHRAM portal:
Any worker who is working in unorganized sector and aged between 16-59, is eligible to register on the e-SHRAM portal e.g., migrant workers, gig workers, platform workers, agricultural workers, MGNREGA workers, Fishermen, Milk men, ASHA workers, Anganwadi workers, Street Vendors, Domestic workers, Rickshaw pullers and other workers engaged in similar other occupations in the unorganised sector. Here, “unorganised worker” means a home-based worker, self-employed worker, or a wage worker in the unorganised sector and it also includes a worker in the organized worker who is not a member of ESIC/ EPFO/ Government Employee.
