Clipped video shared as Rahul Gandhi promising Potato cultivation on Moon

A video clip of Rahul Gandhi’s speech in Gujarat is widely doing the rounds on social media. In the video clip, Rahul Gandhi can be heard saying ‘I will provide you fields on the moon and in the future, you will grow potatoes there. I will put a machine there and we will bring the potatoes back to Gujarat’. Let’s fact-check the claim made in the post.

Claim: Video of Rahul Gandhi promising Potato cultivation on Moon.

Fact: The statements of Rahul Gandhi about providing farming lands on the moon and bringing back potatoes to Gujarat were taken out of context from his election speech in Gujarat in 2017. In the full video, Rahul Gandhi can be heard attributing those imaginary statements to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Hence the claim made in the post is FALSE.

When we subjected the screenshots of the video to reverse image search technique, a full video of Rahul Gandhi’s speech in Gujarat was obtained in the results. The video is of Rahul Gandhi addressing the people of Patan ahead of the Gujarat Elections-2017. In the full video, Rahul Gandhi discusses the hardships faced by various communities in Gujarat like farmers, businessmen etc., and also the government’s apathy in providing employment opportunities to the youth of the state. Rahul Gandhi also took a dig at PM Modi’s promises and his ‘demonetisation’ move. In the full video, the context of the statements that Rahul Gandhi has made in the video clip can be heard from 19:58 duration. Rahul Gandhi says–‘Modi ji says.. You are not able to make money from farming here.. Look! there is the moon there.. I will provide you farm lands on it.. and in the future you will grow potatoes there.. I will put a machine there.. and we will bring those potatoes back to Gujarat’.

To sum it up, statements of Rahul Gandhi about providing farming lands on moon and bringing potatoes back to Gujarat were taken out of context. In the full video, Rahul Gandhi can be heard attributing those imaginary statements to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
