A video is being shared on social media (here, here, and here) with the claim that a Rohingya Muslim, disguised in a burqa, was caught by the police attempting to steal from a Hindu household in India. Let’s verify the claim made in the post in this article.

Claim: The video shows a Rohingya Muslim disguised in a burqa being caught by the police while attempting to steal from a Hindu household in India.
Fact: The video shows a 27-year-old Rohingya man named Rashid Ahmed, who was detained by police during a routine check near the Shalbagan checkpost in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, on 23 July 2025. He is from Rohingya Camp No. 26. Bangladeshi police suspect he was attempting to enter the camp secretly for criminal activity. There is no evidence that he was caught stealing from a Hindu household. The video is unrelated to India. Hence, the claim made in the post is FALSE.
A reverse image search of keyframes from the viral video led us to several Bangladeshi media reports (here, here, and here) featuring screenshots from the same video, dated 24 July 2025. According to these reports, the incident took place on 23 July 2025 in Cox’s Bazar city of Bangladesh. The man seen wearing a burqa in the video has been identified as 27-year-old Rashid Ahmed, who was detained by the police near the Shalbagan checkpost in the Teknaf area of Cox’s Bazar. Rashid is the son of Farid Ahmed, a resident of Rohingya Camp No. 26.

Speaking to the media, Officer-in-Charge of Teknaf Model Police Station, Giyasuddin, stated that Rashid was caught during a routine police check. His behaviour, clothing, and manner of speaking raised suspicion, prompting the police to stop and detain him. They suspect he was attempting to enter the camp secretly to carry out some criminal activity. Legal proceedings are currently underway. We found no reports suggesting that he was fleeing after stealing from a Hindu household.
To sum up, an unrelated video from Bangladesh is falsely shared as a Rohingya Muslim caught stealing from a Hindu household in India.
