An old video from Libya is falsely shared as a recent Hamas attack

A video is going viral on social media platforms showing armed people shooting down a vehicle. The claim being made is that this video depicts Hamas fighters in the act of shooting. This article aims to fact-check the claim.

Claim: The video shows Hamas fighters shooting down a vehicle.

Fact: The video, in reality, is from 2020 and depicts an incident in Libya’s capital city, Tripoli. It has no connection with the ongoing Palestine-Israel conflict or Hamas fighters. Hence, the claim made in the post is False.

To fact-check the claim, a reverse image search on the internet was conducted using keyframes from the video. This search led to several articles dating back to 2020. These articles, from sources like Alhurra, Piter TV, and Lenta.Ru, shared (also here) the same video in June 2020, stating that it captured an ambush incident in Libya’s capital city, Tripoli. It was reported that the ambush was an action by the Government of National Accord forces against the Libyan National Army.

This evidence conclusively proves that the video circulating with a claim of showing Hamas fighters in action is wrong. It is an old video from a different geopolitical situation.

Thus, the claim is false, and the video has nothing to do with Hamas or the ongoing Palestine-Israel conflict.

To sum up, the viral video being shared with a claim that it shows Hamas fighters shooting is false.
