A photo (here, here, and here) allegedly showing a real Hindu wedding ceremony has gone viral lately. In the photo, the bride can be seen wearing skimpy clothes. The post’s description of this viral photo in Hindi translates to “The ban on burqa and hijab is just to save this culture… The sisters of blind devotees are now happy!” We fact-check this claim through this article.
Claim: This photo of a bride wearing a bikini is from a real Hindu wedding ceremony.
Fact: This is an AI-generated image that does not depict a real incident. Hence, the claim made in the post is False.
To check the veracity of the viral claim, we performed a reverse image search to see if such a photo was uploaded by anyone on social media claiming it to be a photo from a wedding. This search did not yield any results.
However, during this search, we found the same image on a subreddit named r/DesiAdultfusion(NSFW), which features AI-generated artwork that is ‘related to desi culture.’ This subreddit contains a lot of images similar to the viral one.
This evidence makes it clear that the viral image does not depict a real wedding but an image generated using Artificial Intelligence. To further verify this, we ran the viral image through the AI content detection tool TrueMedia. The analysis( archive link) reports showed the image was found to have ‘Substantial evidence of manipulation.’
We also ran the image through Sight Engine (archive link), which is another AI content detection tool, even this tool highlighted the likeness of this image being an AI-generated one at 99%.
To sum up, an AI-generated image of a Hindu wedding ceremony is being shared with a communal narrative, claiming it is a real incident.
