A video of a collision of two trains is being shared on social media (here, here, and here) claiming it to be the accident of India’s Vande Bharat. Let’s verify the claim made in the post.

The Archived post can be seen here.

Claim: The visuals show the accident of the Vande Bharat train.

Fact: The visuals show a train accident in Chile. On 20 June 2024, two people were killed and nine injured in Chile when a passenger train in a test run by Chile’s state railway company (EFE) collided with a cargo train operated by private rail firm Fepasa. This is not the Vande Bharat train accident in India. Hence, the claim made in the post is FALSE.

On performing the reverse image search using the keyframes of the viral video, we found a video featuring the same visuals uploaded on the official YouTube channel of the Associated Press on 20 June 2024. The title of the video reads “Chile train collision kills at least 2 people, injures several others.”

Using the evidence as a clue, we performed a relevant keyword search and found media reports on the incident (here, here, and here). As per the news reports, on 20 June 2024, two people were killed and nine injured in Chile when a passenger train in a test run by Chile’s state railway company (EFE) collided with a cargo train operated by private rail firm Fepasa.

Upon closely analysing the viral video alongside the visuals in these reports, we discovered notable similarities, including the code written on the train. Below is the comparison between the train in the viral video and the train in the news.

To sum up, a video of a train accident in Chile is shared as India’s Vande Bharat train accident.
