A video (here, here, and here) showing individuals pelting stones at vehicles on a ghat road is going viral on social media, with the claim that it depicts Muslims pelting stones at an Army convoy in Jammu & Kashmir. Let’s examine the facts behind this claim.
Claim: The viral video shows Muslims pelting stones at an Army convoy in Jammu & Kashmir.
Fact: The video was not filmed in Indian-administered Jammu & Kashmir, but in Muzaffarabad, located in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. We found no credible news reports of any recent stone-pelting incidents at an Army convoy in Jammu & Kashmir. Hence, the claim is FALSE.
To verify the viral video, we conducted a reverse image search using keyframes from the footage. This led us to several social media posts suggesting that the location shown in the video is in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (here, here, and here). Some users specifically claimed that the place is Muzaffarabad.
Based on these findings, we conducted further searches using relevant keywords and confirmed that the location is indeed in Muzaffarabad, in PoK (here and here). Stock photo websites such as Shutterstock, iStock Photo, and Flickr also feature images of this place (here, here, and here).
Additionally, we located the same spot on Google Maps, identified as Lohar Gali, situated on Abbottabad Road in Muzaffarabad, Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. This further supports the conclusion that the viral video was filmed at this location.
Furthermore, we searched the internet using relevant keywords to check if any news reports covered an incident similar to what is seen in the viral video from Muzaffarabad. This led us to a few news articles (here, here, and here) reporting that in May 2024, protests broke out in Muzaffarabad over rising food and fuel prices, during which some individuals pelted stones at a Pakistani army convoy. However, we could not independently verify whether the viral video is directly related to this particular incident.
Responding to the viral video, the Indian government’s fact-checking unit, PIB Fact Check, clarified on X that the claim circulating online — alleging an attack on a convoy of CISF and CRPF personnel in Jammu & Kashmir — is false. They confirmed that the video is old and was actually recorded in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
To sum up, video from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir is being falsely shared as showing Muslims pelting stones at an Army Convoy in Jammu & Kashmir.
