A video going viral on social media (here, here, and here) shows a man flogging a couple with a stick in front of a crowd. The post claims the incident occurred in Bangladesh. Let’s verify the truth behind the video in this article.

Claim: A video shows a man flogging a man and a woman with a stick publicly in Bangladesh.

Fact: The video is not from Bangladesh. It is from Chopra, Uttar Dinajpur, West Bengal, where a TMC worker allegedly flogged a couple on 28 June 2024, following orders from a village kangaroo court over accusations of an extramarital affair. Hence, the claim made in the post is FALSE.

A reverse image search of the keyframes from the viral video led us to several reports (here, here, and here) (archived here, here, and, here) from July 2024, featuring screenshots of the same viral video. According to reports, the incident occurred on 28 June 2024 in Chopra, Uttar Dinajpur, West Bengal. A TMC worker allegedly flogged the couple following orders from a village kangaroo court over accusations of an extramarital affair.

A Google search with relevant Bangla keywords led to a TV9 Bangla report (archived) published on 2 July 2024, confirming the incident occurred in Chopra, Uttar Dinajpur, West Bengal.

Additionally, we accessed the FIR copy of the case, which identified the accused as Tajmul alias JCB. The incident took place in West Bengal, not in Bangladesh.

To sum up,  a June 2024 video of a man publicly flogging a couple in West Bengal is falsely shared as that of Bangladesh.
