2016 photo shared as Aravind Kejriwal offering Namaz on the eve of New Year

A photo of Delhi Chief Minister Aravind Kejriwal shared on social media claiming that Kejriwal offered Namaz at Jama Masjid on the first day of New Year. Let’s verify the claim made in the post.

Claim: Delhi CM Aravind Kejriwal offered Namaz at Jama Masjid on the eve of New Year.

Fact:  Photo shared in the post is an old one. This photo shows Aravind Kejriwal offering Namaz at an Iftar event in Malerkotla, Punjab during 2016. ‘AAP Punjab’ official Twitter handle shared the same photo on ‘07 July 2016’. Hence, the claim made in the post is False.

On reverse image search of the photo shared in the post, a similar photo is found in a tweet made by the official Twitter handle of ‘AAP Punjab’ on ‘07 July 2016’. Greeting a ‘Happy Eid’ to the people of the country, the Aam Aadmi Party shared this photo.

On searching for more details about this photo, we found a similar image in ‘Getty’ images website. In the description of the photo, it is mentioned that the Delhi Chief Minister Aravind Kejriwal in a skull cap, offered prayers with devotees before breaking Roza in the holy month of Ramzan at Malerkotla in Sangrur on ‘04 July 2016’. The same photo with a similar description was shared in the HT Syndication image sharing website. Media reports about Aravind Kejriwal attending this Iftar event at Malerkotla can be seen here and here.

To sum it up, 2016 photo of Aravind Kejriwal is now being shared as him offering Namaz at Jama Masjid on the eve of New Year.
