2014 video of Mi-8 crash in Russia shared as recent crash landing of an Indian army helicopter

A video is being shared on social media claiming that it shows recent visuals of an Indian Army helicopter crash. In the wake of the recent incident of an Indian Army Cheetah Helicopter crash in Arunachal Pradesh, this video is being shared on social media. Let’s verify the claim made in the post.

Claim: Recent video showing the crash visuals of an Indian Army helicopter.

Fact: The video shared in the post shows old visuals of the Mi-8 helicopter crash during an airshow in Russia. The incident took place in September 2014. The video shared in the post is old and does not show the Indian Army’s helicopter crash visuals. Hence, the claim made in the post is FALSE.  

On reverse image search of the screenshots of the video, a video with similar visuals was found published on a YouTube channel on 05 September 2014. The description of the video states, “Disastrous Mi-8 Helicopter Crash in Gelendzhik, Russia (Sep-5-2014 )”. When we searched for further sources using these keywords, we found the complete details of this helicopter crash in an article published by the ‘Military.com’ website on 07 September 2014. This article reported it as the visuals of a Mi-8 Helicopter crash during an airshow in Russia.

While taking part at the Gelendzhik Air Show in Russia, a chopper belonging to the Russian “Panh Helicopters” air company crash landed on the airfield. Two people were killed and one was seriously injured in the accident. Reporting the same, a few other news websites have also published articles. They can be seen here and here.
