2011 video related to a police firing incident in Bihar is being shared as from the recent Assam eviction drive

A video accompanied by a post is being widely shared on social media claiming that the visuals of inhuman behaviour are from the recent eviction drive in Assam. In the video, a person is seen stomping on another person. Let us fact-check the claim made in the post.

Claim: This video of a person stomping on another person is from the recent eviction drive in Assam.

Fact: The video in the post was taken in 2011 during a police firing incident in Forbesganj, Bihar and not from Assam. A video clip of a government-appointed photographer stomping on a person in Assam went viral recently. On 23 September 2021, at least two protesters were killed, and multiple police personnel injured when an eviction drive led to clashes between police and the people at Dholpur area in Assam’s Darrang district. However, the video in the post is not related to Assam. Hence, the claim made in the post is MISLEADING.

When reverse image search is done on the screenshots of the video with relevant keywords, a YouTube video with similar visuals was found. The YouTube video was uploaded on 12 June 2011 with the title, ‘Forbesganj, Araria, Bihar, India Police Firing on June 03, 2011’. The YouTube video had been clipped at 0:08 timestamp to make the 33-second video that is being shared through the post.

Taking the cue that this video is from Bihar, we searched on the internet and found news articles about the incident. The person in the video, stomping on another person was a home guard who was suspended later. The police there opened fire on a mob on the outskirts of Forbesganj, killing four persons on 03 June 2011. The people were protesting the blocking of a road to Bhajanpur village by an upcoming factory.
