On 10 May 2025, the Indian government announced that a ceasefire agreement had been reached between India and Pakistan following Operation Sindoor (here, here and here). According to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) contacted his Indian counterpart at 3:35 PM, and both sides agreed to halt firing by 5:00 AM IST the same day. However, the Indian government later stated that Pakistan violated the agreement just hours after it came into effect (here and here). In response, Misri confirmed that the Indian armed forces were giving a strong and appropriate reply to the ceasefire breach.

Amid the ongoing tensions, a video (here, here and here) is going viral on social media claiming that Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif admitted in the National Assembly that “we don’t have the power to attack India, and apart from Turkey, no one came forward to help us — in this situation, we have no choice but to surrender to India.” In the clip, Sharif can be seen addressing the parliament. Let’s verify the authenticity of this viral video and uncover the truth behind the claim.

Claim: The viral video shows Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif admitting defeat in a “war with India” during a parliamentary address after the 10 May 2025 ceasefire agreement.

Fact: The video is a deepfake, edited using Artificial Intelligence (AI). There are no credible reports confirming that Shehbaz Sharif made such a statement in parliament. Therefore, the claim is FALSE.

To verify the claim, we performed a keyword search related to Shehbaz Sharif and Operation Sindoor. This led us to his official speech addressing the Pakistani public after the ceasefire agreement. In the speech (here and here), there was no mention of any statements resembling those made in the viral video.

For more details about the scenes in the viral video, we conducted a keyword search related to Shehbaz Sharif’s speeches in the National Assembly of Pakistan, as referenced in the claim. This led us to the full version of the video available on the official YouTube channel of Pakistan’s government broadcaster, PTV Parliament. The footage is from Shehbaz Sharif’s address to Parliament on 7 May 2025, following Operation Sindoor. Nowhere in the original video does Sharif make the statements attributed to him in the viral clip. Additionally, we found no credible news reports supporting the claim that he made such remarks in Parliament.

Upon closer inspection of the viral video, we suspected that it had been edited using Artificial Intelligence (AI). One of the first signs was the repetition of the same clip at multiple points, for example, the person sitting behind Shehbaz Sharif is seen moving their hand in exactly the same way in several instances. Additionally, around the 48-second mark, a book placed on the podium in front of Sharif appears to unnaturally lift into the air, further indicating signs of digital manipulation.

To verify this, we analysed the video using Hive’s AI-content detection tool, which flagged the viral clip as likely containing AI-generated or deepfake elements. According to the report, the audio was identified as 99% likely to have been generated using artificial intelligence. This strongly suggests that the viral video is a deepfake, created by manipulating footage from Shehbaz Sharif’s actual speech in the Pakistani Parliament on 7 May 2025 (here, here, here and here).

To sum up, the video showing Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif admitting defeat is a deepfake created using AI.
