A video accompanied by a post is being widely shared on social media claiming that people from the Sangh Parivar were thrashing Muslims in Tripura. Let us fact-check the claim made in the post.
Claim: Video of people from Sangh Parivar thrashing Muslims in Tripura.
Fact: The video actually shows the killing of a rowdy sheeter in Ashok Nagar, Bangalore. The incident happened on the night of 20 April 2021 when a gang attacked the victim with lethal weapons and escaped. Protest rallies were taken out by religious organisations in Tripura, against the vandalism of temples and Durga Puja pandals in Bangladesh on 15 October 2021. During some of these rallies, miscreants reportedly vandalised several houses, shops, and a mosque. This video has gone viral amidst such reports of violence in Tripura. Hence, the claim made in the post is FALSE.
When reverse image search is done on the screenshots of the video, the same video was found in an article published on 26 April 2021. The article, which is written in Kannada says that a rowdy sheeter named Ravi Varma alias Appu (30) was murdered by a rowdy sheeter Dinesh and another gang in Bangalore’s Ashoka Nagar area. Even according to ETV Bharat’s Facebook post, the video of the rowdy sheeter’s assassination went viral on social media.
Taking a cue from the ETV Bharat article, several news reports about the incident were found when searched on google with relevant keywords. According to an article by The Hindu, Ravi Verma was a habitual offender who was stabbed to death in front of his house in Ashok Nagar, Bangalore. Ravi Verma alias Appu (30) was a rowdy sheeter in Vivek Nagar police station who was hacked to death in Ashok Nagar police station limits. The incident happened on the night of 20 April 2021 when a gang attacked the victim with lethal weapons and escaped.
