The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) released the Crime in India report for the year 2015 recently. According to this report, Rs 8210.4 crore worth property was stolen in the country in the year 2015 with Maharashtra alone accounting for more than 50% of the value of the property stolen.
6.25 Lakh property related offences registered in 2015
In the year 2015, a total of 6.25 lakh cases were registered against property related offences across the country. More than 3/4th of these crimes are related to Theft, about 18% are related to Burglary and about 6% are related to Robbery. The rest of the cases are related to Dacoity. Within the States and UTs, Delhi reported the highest number of such cases. In fact, 1 out of every 5 such cases reported in the country was from Delhi. In 2014, Delhi accounted for only 15% of the total cases. Maharashtra reported more than 87000 such cases. Delhi & Maharashtra together reported close to 1/3rd of all such cases reported in the country in 2015. Ten States/UTs reported more than 20000 such cases each while 10 other States/UTs reported less than 1000 such cases each. Out of the bigger states, Kerala & Punjab reported a lower number of such cases. Among the States, Sikkim reported only 220 such cases in 2015.
More than half the Property stolen in value terms is from Maharashtra
In 2015, a total of Rs 8210.4 crore worth of property was stolen in the country. The value of the property stolen increased by more than 3 times between 2005 and 2015. More than half (55.2%) was stolen from the state of Maharashtra alone followed by Delhi (8.8%). In 2014, Maharashtra accounted for less than 40% of the worth of total property stolen. In 7 different states, more than 3% of the total property was stolen. In 19 States/UTs, less than 1% of the total property stolen was stolen. The average value of property stolen per case was highest in Maharashtra among the states with more than 1000 such registered cases. The average value of property stolen per registered case in Maharashtra was Rs 5.19 lakh followed by Rs 4.85 lakh in Meghalaya. The average value of property stolen per case was less than a lakh in 23 States/UTs. The All India average stood at Rs 1.3 lakh per case. Among the bigger states, the average value of property stolen was lowest in Bihar & Jharkhand.
Only 16.4% of the stolen property is recovered
In 2015, only 16.4% of the stolen property was recovered across the country. Among the states, Tamil Nadu was on the top recovering almost 2/3rd of the value of the stolen property followed by Telangana that recovered 58%. Only 12 States/UTs recovered more than 40%, while 8 States/UTs recovered less than the national average of 16.4%. In Maharashtra, only 5% of the stolen property was recovered.
