UP Police thrashed the person in this video over charges of theft, not for saying ‘Pakistan Zindabad’

A video through a post is being widely shared on social media claiming that Uttar Pradesh Police were thrashing a person after ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ slogans were raised. Let us fact-check the claim made in the post.

Claim: Video of UP Police thrashing a person for saying ‘Pakistan Zindabad’.

Fact: The incident is from Chandauli district of UP, where policemen had brutally beat up children as they were caught over charges of theft in a mobile shop; not because the person had said ‘Pakistan Zindabad’. According to Chandauli Police, the video is more than a year old, where both the policemen involved were suspended after the incident. Hence, the claim made in the post is MISLEADING.

When reverse image search is done on the screenshots of the video, videos (here and here) with similar visuals were found on social media at least since May 2021, with the claim that police were beating the people because of theft charges. The posts claim that the incident was from Mathela village in Chandauli district of UP, where policemen brutally beat up children on the charges of theft. Nowhere in these older posts does it say that the police have beaten the person because he said ‘Pakistan Zindabad’.

When we searched in google with relevant keywords, news reports which reported about the incident were found. A similar video posted by Times of India shows the policeman beating some persons over allegations of mobile theft. It has been reported that the police personnel beat up children as they were caught over charges of theft in a mobile shop. After the video of the incident went viral, SP Amit Kumar had suspended Kailawar outpost in-charge Shivanand Verma and head constable Dilip Kumar of the Balua Police Station (in Chandauli district of UP).

The official Twitter handle of Chandauli Police had tweeted on 20 March 2022, saying that the viral video is more than a year old and that both the policemen involved in the incident were suspended after the incident. In the same tweet, the Chandauli Police have appealed to people to not circulate such information without full facts and clear information.

To sum it up, an old video of UP Police beating up people over charges of theft is falsely shared as UP Police thrashing a person for saying ‘Pakistan Zindabad’.
