Unrelated images from 2019 shared as that of recent Train accident in West Bengal

A post is being shared on social media claiming that it shows the visuals related to the recent incident of a train derailment in West Bengal. For context, the Bikaner – Guwahati Express got derailed near New Domohani station under Alipurduar Junction division of the Northeast Frontier Railway. Multiple casualties are reported from the incident. Let’s fact-check if the image is related to the latest accident.

Claim: Image related to the recent incident of Train Derailment in West Bengal

Fact: While it is true that the Bikaner – Guwahati Express got derailed in West Bengal resulting in multiple casualties, the image shared in the post is related to a 2019 train accident from Bihar. Hence the post is MISLEADING.

Reverse image search on the image shared in the post led to a Times of India article that reported the derailment of coaches of the Seemanchal Express on 03 February 2019. The description of the image states, “Rescue workers look for survivors after the train derailed near Sahadai Buzurg railway station“, and the image is credited to Reuters.

A search on the Reuters website with relevant keywords led us to the same image with the title ‘Seven passengers killed when train derails in eastern India‘. This link also includes another image from the same incident. Video report on the same incident can be found here. The details of the image can also be found on Reuters Pictures website.

Seven persons were reported to have been killed and several others injured when a Delhi-bound Seemanchal Express train was derailed near Sahadai Buzurg railway station, Bihar on 03 February 2019. Multiple media outlets have reported this incident which can be found here, here, and here.

To sum in up, 2019 images related to derailment of the Seemanchal Express in Bihar are being attributed to recent derailment of Bikaner – Guwahati Express in West Bengal.
