A post is being widely shared on social media claiming that Tata Motors is celebrating sales exceeding 30 million and that through a questionnaire you can get a chance to win Tata Safari. Let us fact-check the claim made in the post.
Claim: Tata Motors contest gives people a chance to win Tata Safari.
Fact: Facebook and Twitter posts from the official accounts of ‘Tata Motors Cars’ state that ‘certain posts in the guise of contests and free merchandise from Tata Motors are being circulated with malicious intent of enabling data pilferage and phishing of anyone who opens the links’. When the link is opened, the web address of the link is seen to be fraudulent because the official website of Tata Motors Cars is cars.tatamotors.com. Hence, the claim made in the post is FALSE.
When we searched for any contests that Tata Motors had recently organised, we found no such contests in their official website or in any news articles published recently. We found posts from Tata Motors Cars’ official Facebook and Twitter accounts stating that ‘it has come to our attention that certain posts in the guise of contests and free merchandise from Tata Motors are being circulated on social media with malicious intent of enabling data pilferage and phishing of anyone who opens the links’. They cautioned the general public that Tata Motors has not announced any such contest and asked the public to refrain from clicking or engaging with such links/ messages. Tata Motors Cars strongly suggested that such fraudulent messages should not be spread further on social media and be deleted immediately.
When we opened the link that is going viral on various social media platforms that free gifts are given through a questionnaire from Tata Motors Cars, the web address of the link is seen to be fraudulent because the official website of Tata Motors Cars is cars.tatamotors.com.
Regarding the sales figures of Tata Motors for May 2021, we found press release from Tata Motors website which says Tata Motors reports domestic sales of 24,552 units in May 2021. Tata Motors sales in the domestic and international market for May 2021 stood at 26,661 vehicles. Domestic Passenger Vehicles for May 2021 sold were 15,181 registering a 40 percent drop month-over-month and Commercial Vehicles sold were 11,401 registering a 32 percent drop month-over-month. To sum it up, the Tata Motors contest about winning Tata Safari is fake.
