A purported statement of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, encouraging people to come out on the streets and protest against the government, is being shared on social media. The purported statement attributed to DY Chandrachud reada- “We are trying our best to save the constitution of India, democracy of India, but your cooperation is also very important for this, all the people should unite and come out on the streets and ask the government about their rights. This dictatorial government will scare people, threaten but you don’t have to be afraid, keep courage and ask the government to account. I am with you.” Let’s verify the claim made in the post.

Claim: A purported statement of CJI DY Chandrachud encouraging people to protest against the government.

Fact: The Public Relations Office (PRO) of the Supreme Court issued a press note clarifying that the viral statement is fake, ill-intended and mischievous. Supreme Court, through the press release, informed that no such post was issued or authorized by the CJI. Hence, the claim made in the post is False.

When searched to check whether CJI DY Chandrachud had made any such statement asking people to come out on the streets and do protests against the government, we found a tweet published by ‘Live Law’ related to this viral statement attributed to CJI DY Chandrachud on social media. The tweet states, “#SupremeCourt issues a statement regarding a fake news being spread in the social media falsely quoting the Chief Justice of India. Law authorities are taking appropriate action in this regard.”

Live Law, in the tweet, shared a press note issued by the Public Relations Office (PRO) of the Supreme Court, regarding this fabricated statement falsely attributed to the CJI. Confirming that the viral quote was falsely attributed to the CJI, the press note stated- “The post is fake, ill-intended and mischievous. No such post has been issued by the Chief Justice of India nor has he authorized any such post. Appropriate action is being taken in this regard with the law enforcement authorities.”

To sum it up, this purported statement of CJI DY Chandrachud encouraging people to come out on the streets and protest against the government is a fake one.
